background on riyadh.

Riyadh is the capital and the most populous city of Saudi Arabia, as well as the capital of Riyadh Province, and part of the historical regions of Najd and Al-Yamama. The city is situated in the center of the Arabian Peninsula on a large plateau, and is home to more than 6 million people. Riyadh has experienced very high rates of population growth in recent decades, expanding from 150,000 residents in the 1960s. According to a recent census, the population of Riyadh is composed of 65% Saudi families and 35% expatriates.

The city is divided into 15 municipal districts, managed by the Municipality of Riyadh, and headed by the mayor of Riyadh, and the Development Authority of Riyadh which is chaired by the governor of the Province. Riyadh is now the administrative and commercial hub of Saudi Arabia; home to many regional and national corporate office headquarters.

good to know.

Saudi Arabia is the highest paying country for most positions, compared to its Middle Eastern neighbors, especially for those from Western Europe and North America. Unlike in the UAE, expatriates still have some degree of leverage in negotiating a ‘hardship’ allowance in Saudi Arabia, and many ask for a 20-30% salary uplift in order to take a position. Many companies will not offer this pay automatically, so job seekers will need to state their salary demands and stick to them.

Expat jobs in Riyadh often provide comprehensive benefits packages, including a yearly flight, accommodations or an accommodation allowance, car allowance, health insurance, schooling for children, and contract completion bonuses. Due to the provision of these benefits and a tax-free salary, many workers are able to save a large portion of their wages each month.

working hours in riyadh.

The working week in Riyadh varies between 40 and 48 hours, depending on company policy. Office hours are usually from 8.30 or 9.00 am to 5.30 or 6.00 pm, but some local Saudi companies choose to split the working day into two, usually from 8.00 am to 1.00 pm, with a second shift between 4.00 to 7.00 pm.

As Friday is the Muslim day of rest, the working week in Riyadh runs from Sunday to Thursday, and the weekend falls on Friday and Saturday. In the month of Ramadan, the working day is reduced to six hours. Government offices are open between 7.30 am to 2.30 pm, and banking hours are from 8 am until noon, and then from 5 pm to 8 pm. It’s important to take into account the five daily prayer times, as well as Islamic holidays.

how to get a job in riyadh.

Expatriates will still have a substantial role to play in the Saudi Arabian workforce for many years to come, although there will undoubtedly be changes in the number of people employed and the type of skills that they are expected to bring. Managerial, professional, and particularly technology experience will be in strong demand for the next few decades.

If you’d like to apply for a job in Riyadh, there are many options available to you, including applying directly to companies, searching on online job boards, and joining networking sites. Working with a recruitment firm is a common option, and still one of the best ways to procure a job within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
