In early August 2015, Matthew Bowles from Randstad Middle East Ltd took on the enormous challenge of walking to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro accompanied by friends all in aid of Good Hope Support Organisation.
Good Hope is a grassroots community organisation located in the Majengo neighbourhood of Moshi. Education is a key component of the work Good Hope does in the community. The education comes in the form of health and well-being, secondary education, and vocational training.
Mount Kilimanjaro stands at 5,895m and is situated in Tanzania. Matthew climbed the mountain in 5 days over a distance of 47 miles with temperatures ranging from as high as 30oc to as low as -15oc. The trek had its difficulties including weather, distance, temperate and altitude sickness.
“Everyone had their ups and downs - the best fact was everyone made it up together as a team in a mixed group of abilities” Matthew Bowles
Matthew and his team raised over £1,000 and some even gave up their summer to volunteer, but there is still more that can be done. Good Hope need more support as it gives children a chance to learn, go to school and make something of their lives in a place where there is very little help and opportunity.
Matthew is already looking at his next challenge and has his sights set on Mount Damavand in Iran, the tallest mountain in the Middle East.
