A foot in the door….
Doing your homework makes you a credible candidate. Employers want to see somebody that can talk with intelligence about their company, its competitors, its past and future opportunities.
- It shows enthusiasm for the company. You are taking the interview seriously andthat speaks volumes.
- You can tailor your experience so that it is relevant to the company as well as the role that you are applying for.
- It can help you to make a decision if that elusive offer arises; knowing how a company works can help you see a career or what may lie ahead.
- How does the business work?
- What are the common or shared characteristics of people in the organization and industry as a whole?
- What does the business actually do or what service does it provide?
- Look at the last two years performance and what is planned for the next five to ten years; is the company recovering, expanding, or consolidating?
- How does the role you are applying for fit into the company as a whole?
- What is the corporate culture?
- Who will be interviewing you? (Remember it could be more than one person so you need to be prepared).
- What is their role? (i.e. are you meeting HR or somebody that will directly manage you should you be successful?).
- How long have they been at the company and what is their background?
You can never know too much and it’s better to be over prepared than under prepared but remember, they are interested in you as well – find a balance!
